Mednovus proudly presents
the next level of MRI Sentinel Event
ferromagnetic detection:
SAFESCAN Entry Sentinel™ GS
- Greater Sensitivity (GS) - generally 2-4 times greater average sensitivity than portals using only the earth's magnetic field or fringing field - Fundamental Technology Advantage
- Utilizes small independent passive DC field which does not radiate or affect MRI quality (discussion link)
- Can be placed in location of choice as the MRI fringing field is not required
- Aperture width of 48" (or can be customized at a small additional cost)
SAFESCAN Patient Sentinel™ GS
- Greater Sensitivity (GS) - generally 2-4 times greater average sensitivity than portals using only the earth's magnetic field or fringing field - Fundamental Technology Advantage
- Utilizes small independent DC passive non-radiating field which does not affect MRI imaging quality (discussion link)
- Can be placed in location of choice as the MRI fringing field is not required
- Free-standing with 24" pass-through aperture to accommodate larger patients

The SAFESCAN Entry Sentinel™ GS and the SAFESCAN Patient Sentinel™ GS are companion portals specifically designed for pre-MRI ferromagnetic (ONLY) detection. These advanced ferromagnetic detection portals are completely self-contained instruments with very visible localizing alarm lights and threat-signal strength metering positioned on the instrument itself to maximize MR Technologist convenience.
The Sentinel™ GS ferromagnetic detection portals are more sensitive than portals relying only on the earth's magnetic field (0.5 G) and/or the small fringing field of modern MRI instruments outside the magnet room Zone IV (typically 0.75 - 1.5 G).
The Entry Sentinel™ GS is best thought of as a line of defense in helping to find larger ferromagnetic threats.
The Patient Sentinel™ GS has a narrower pass-through aperture, which places the sensors closer to a ferromagnetic threat. As the detected signal from a ferromagnetic threat decreases to the cube of the distance (2X
distance = 8X smaller signal), the Patient Sentinel™ GS receives a larger signal than does the Entry Sentinel™ GS, and is therefore significantly more sensitive for smaller ferromagnetic threats.
The Entry Sentinel™ GS and the Patient Sentinel™ GS can be purchased independently, but MR Safety is enhanced if these portals are used in tandem, as they have different sensitivity and performance characteristics. An alternative is to employ the Entry Sentinel™ GS with the Target Scanner™.
The components of the Entry Sentinel™ GS and the Patient Sentinel™ GS are of the highest quality to maximize signal-to-noise ratio and detectability. Special limited introductory prices apply.

Detectability Misconception
A common misconception is that entry-style ferromagnetic detection portals can always detect small threats. The truth is that sometimes ferromagnetic detection portals with a 48" aperture can detect small threats, but sometimes these threats are not detected. Therefore, entry portals realistically are intended for larger threat detection. On the other hand, patient-style ferromagnetic detection portals, such as our Patient Sentinel™ GS portal, much more readily detect smaller ferromagnetic threats, although no ferromagnetic detection system is absolutely 100% effective in all instances.
Detection depends upon a number of factors, including:
- The distance from the sensor
- The orientation of the threat to the sensor, and also to the magnetization source
- The shape of the threat (round, elongated, etc.)
- The presence or absence of pre-magnetization
- The characteristics of the material ("ferromagnetically hard" vs. "ferromagnetically soft")
These all relate to the physics of ferromagnetic detection, which, try as hard as we might, we cannot change!
So, it is unfair to "oversell" or mislead about even the best ferromagnetic detection portals and their capability.
Mednovus is a company with a deep commitment to problem solving through innovation and superior technology. We consider our SAFESCAN MRI Sentinel™ GS portals to be a major advance in MR Safety. Nevertheless, the conscientiousness of your MR Technologist is the single most important consideration in protecting your patients.
The MR Technologist will always be the patient's best friend!
